John Miller applies for a special claim to mine 209 acres near Naseby using ground sluicing.
“APPLICATION FOR SPECIAL CLAIM.
Otago Mining District, 12th September, 1830.
To the Warden at Macraes–I hereby apply for a special claim for gold-mining purposes, under the provisions of the Mining Act, 1886, of the lands hereinafter described.
Dated at Naseby this 12th day of Sept., 1880.

Locality where the land applied for is situate— Comprising south-eastern portion of Horse Flat, Macraes, extending west of Chinaman’s claim to near Turnbull’s Creek.
Extent of land applied for—2oo acres.
Amount of capital proposed to be invested— £6000.
Proposed mode of working the land— Ground sluicing.
Term for which license is required –21 years.
General remarks–The applicant applies for a large area, as if his application is granted he will be carrying on mining operations under circumstances of extraordinary difficulty and involving the expenditure of considerable sums of money.”
